General Overview of the VS-Dir FFA links directory script and service:
The VS-Dir FFA links directory script and service is similar in concept to the traditional ffa (free for all) links services with several major differences. The VS-Dir FFA script enables the webmaster to create FFA Pages which by Topics, which people can then post their links and content to. FFA links can be free or paid entries, with upgrades (such as images) available. The FFA services also enable the webmaster to sell Ad Space. Each VS-Dir FFA site is independently owned and operated, with unique rules or obligations attached to each venue. The VS-Dir FFA sites are part of the VS-Dir directory script and service and can, depending on the webmaster, become linked into the overall Realm-12 network.
The major difference to the VS-Dir FFA script and service to traditional FFA scripts and sites center around several major areas - the use of email, space allotted to each listing, keywords, and duration.
1. Use of email:
In traditional FFA boards, the person wanting to post an Entry or listing must usually provide an email. After confirming their email and having their link posted at one (or more) FFA site, their email goes into a database which is then shared between Network Venues (other ffa sites in a network), and oftentimes with the upgraded, or Pro, FFA member. Traditional FFA venues became vehicles for 'list building', wherein the person who posted their ad then received email from other people regarding their own goods, services, and websites.
A major criticism of FFA sites is that they become vehicles for email spam. Many of the early venues (2000 and beyond) had a practice of sending the FFA database to the Pro Members, who would then keep the database and treat it as their own personal list. They would use bulk mailers to then send the email addressess commercial email without the email owners' consent. This practice helped fuel a major controversy within the email advertising industry regarding spam and spam complaints which eventually lead to FFA sites in general as being viewed in a negative light.
The VS-Dir FFA service is not connected to list building or sharing of email addresses. VS-Dir FFA sites can provide free links for the public, or for only the members of a particular venue. The only person who ever see's the poster's email is the Admin, or owner, of the FFA service. It is not shared to other members, or other Networks. Typically, the only email a person listing a site at at a VS-Dir will receive is when they post the link, upon acceptance or rejection of the link, and when the link expires. If the FFA service requires membership into the venue, then the member receives the normal amount of email any other member receives from Admin only while being a member of that particular venue.
2. Content and Articles vs one-line entries:
Traditional FFA venues typically limit the amount of space available in a Description to one short sentence. This made seo optimization difficult for the listing as most search engines require an adequate amount of revelvant content when determining site ranking. Search Engines do favor Articles over simple one sentence listings. VS-Dir FFA pages can be configured by the webmaster to allow ample characters per listing to allow the User room to create an actual article of relevant content for their FFA Entry - as opposed to being limited to one short sentence.
3. Keywords:
While a few traditional FFA services allow a seperate form and then space for keywords, most do not. VS-Dir FFA Topic Pages can be configured to allow seperate space for adding relevant keywords to a post. Keywords work hand-in-hand with Relevant Content to help make any listing at a VS-Dir FFA attractive to the Search Engines.
4. Duration:
A major frustration for many using traditional FFA pages is that their listings roll off very quickly - sometimes in less than 24 hours. VS-Dir FFA listings can be set by the webmaster for much longer periods of time. While an FFA entry will never be a permanent link solution, listings at VS-Dir FFA venues can last for many days - even months - and provide a stable link along with relevant content which the Search Engines can then index.
5. Reach:
Once the Realm-12 network is fully developed and operational, listings at VS-Dir FFA sites can be included in the larger Directory - thus expanding the reach of an FFA listing beyond the local page or venue. There are very few FFA Networks that really provide 'extended' visibility beyond a local page. Realm-12 is a search engine and searchable agent which shares links and their content and other information throught a Network of VS-Dir Directories. It is similar in concept to the VS-Ten traffic exchange network which connects many traffic exchanges together in a Network, which then trades sites in local traffic exchanges to the other traffic exchanges in the overall Network. Realm-12 will network VS-Dir directories in a similar manner and will trade links, content, and information among all the directories.
